Catholicism was born in Ceylon during the times of colonial rule in the country. Numerous missionary schools and institutions sprung up in various parts of Sri Lanka with an objective of spreading the traditions and beliefs of the faith. Sooner rather than later churches were being built to cater to the growing followers of Catholicism. One such striking example is undoubtedly the Ragama Basilica Church also referred to as the National Basilica in Tewatte. Housed on a land called Orange Hill Estate, the sanctuary was conceived to fulfil a vow that sought the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the country during the tumultuous times of the 2nd World War. The then Archbishop Masson received the approval from Pope Pius XII to build a Basilica which would honour Our Lady of Lanka. The Basilica was finally completed on the 6th of February 1947 and the statue of Our Lady was acknowledged as Our Lady of Lanka. A journey to the Basilica can easily be arranged for those of you who want a welcome break from the lavish resorts and sunny beaches. Delve into the depths of local history and discover the splendour of the Ragama Basilica Church. Surrounded by trees, the premises' sees devotees ambling along a series of steps that eventually lead to the main entrance. If you are travelling in a vehicle, a road nearby encircles the main entry and will lead you to the steps. As you make your way you will be welcomed by two imposing statuettes; one of Archbishop Masson and Cardinal Thomas Cooray who were the brains behind the construction of the church. Additionally the front porch depicts two towers that stand testament to the great commands of Christianity; the love of God and the love for one's neighbour. The granite pillars that decorate the front porch depict the six dioceses of which the Catholic Church was divided into. Within the main oriental arch, circular glass windows act as a backdrop to the bronze Christ on a cross. Famous bronze sculptor Leila Peris is said to have sculpted such an impressive figure of Christ. The main altar is adorned in white stone while the sanctuary behind it holds the Holy of Hollies. This is a tabernacle that shows figures of two angels on either side. The sanctuary's door reveals a traditional design believed to be of Kandyan origin and is made of rosewood. The altar railing comprises of iron wood, jak, teak, red & white sandalwood and mahogany. The Basilica can easily be accessed by staying at a Sri Lanka spa resort.
