How to Organize Your Kitchen

Your kitchen—home to the junk drawer, forgotten food that perished long ago and seemingly black holes where expensive spices, including that holiday star anise you know you have, have disappeared. Getting the heart of the home organized starts with loving your organization space. Custom-built cabinets can be designed with the right details, sizes and dimensions to make organizing easier from the beginning. Start by considering just what kind of cook you are. Do you need a lot of drawer partitions to keep spices in check? Are you tall and have no problem reaching that top shelf?

Working with a custom craftsman gets you started on the right foot, but you also need to step up to that proverbial plate (so you can load it with tasty homemade dishes). A saving grace in many kitchens is a lazy Susan, that spinning wonder which ensures that nothing is delegated to the back of the cupboard. You can even choose to have these permanently installed in your cupboards.

Cooking Smart

It’s a no brainer that cookbooks belong in the kitchen—but be careful, because books aren’t exactly the sturdiest of things. They’re vulnerable to steam, grease and heat. It’s best to keep them in a closed cupboard, or ideally one with glass windows so you can quickly spot them while keeping them protected. However, there are items which are best as a grab and go.

Aprons, dish towels, pot holders and other frequently used items which aren’t vulnerable to the common kitchen should be hung and within easy reach. This will free up more cabinet space for storing items you don’t use as regularly. Remember, the purpose of a custom kitchen is both convenience and beauty, so indulge in that cute apron you’ve been eyeing and display it proudly.

Now We’re Cooking

When it comes to actually putting items in drawers and cupboards, sort them by use and need. For example, all your baking supplies should be on the same shelf so you can whip up Grandma’s cake without jumping from cupboard to cupboard. However, if you rarely bake, put those items on a less accessible shelf. Keep an eye on what items you use the most in a month and plan your cupboard designation accordingly.

A cooking zone around the stove should also be designated, and this includes keeping frequently used pots and pans within hand’s reach. If you have a favorite sauce pan, it should be easy to grab. However, if you have a casserole dish that’s only busted out for the holidays, it can be kept more out of reach. Simultaneously, make sure you don’t keep flammable items too close to the stove, especially if there are little ones in the house.

Use Your Office Skills Some items should be “filed” instead of stored, like those Tupperware containers. It’s best to stack the tubs and file the tops in a drawer so you can easily sort them. Lid racks are a wise investment and can be easily stored in deep shelves that aren’t very tall. Of course, nothing beats a customized shelf storage unit, and this can be a fun, integral part of designing your kitchen cabinets.

Who says you can’t have beauty and smarts—especially in the kitchen? A well-organized kitchen is one where the joy of cooking comes alive. Make the most of your new, personalized kitchen by getting (and staying) organized.
