Outfitting a patio with the right furniture and accessories is as much a treat as lounging in it on a lazy afternoon. The two things you probably want to consider when shopping for patio furniture are quality, and ease of maintenance. But there's more to making the right purchase. What's your pleasure: aluminum, plastic or PVC, steel or wrought iron, rattan, wicker or wood? All have advantages, all have drawbacks. Aluminum/plastic are lightweight, easy to store and usually less expensive. Steel and wrought iron are heavy and durable. But you have to weatherproof them and they aren't easy to move around. Rattan, wicker and wood tend to weather quicker. If you go with wood, weather-resistant materials like teak, redwood, cypress or cedar are more durable. So start with your personal preference; then choose the functionality you want. And check your wallet. There's no sense in bankrupting your entertainment budget. Choose furniture that fits your patio's area. Some try to cram too much furniture in too little space. And others do just the opposite. Measure your space and measure the pieces you're interested in when you shop for outdoor furniture. Spend more than just a minute relaxing on pieces you like, because you want comfort too. Will you have shade? If you have lots of trees or an awning, you've got it made in the... But if not, you'll need a good table umbrella for those sunny late afternoon summer days. One that adjusts horizontally to face the sun is best. And make sure it self-anchors - to the ground not the table; or a heavy wind could blow your umbrella, table and that great steak dinner away. Hit the Sales. The best time to buy patio furniture is the winter. But inventories are not that great. Bargains can be had during fall clearances when retailers slash prices so they can clear out stock. The worst time top buy is the first warm weekend of the spring. Get the best quality you can afford. * On large patio furniture pieces, cushions that have springs and hold their shape are best; and will last longer. * For metal furniture, take a magnet with you to make sure it's not aluminum. If you want the more expensive heavy metal quality, the magnet helps make sure you get what you pay for. * If you want aluminum lounge chairs, look closely to see that they're single-piece and not welded segments. They're a bit more expensive but last twice as long. * Make sure all chairs are sturdy and level. Sit in it and move around to see if it shifts or rocks. And the chairs you like have cross bracing on the legs, all the better. * The best screws on patio furniture are stainless steel. The worst are stainless steel. Often, that will tell you the quality of the outdoor furniture you buy. * And if you outdoor furniture chairs and table legs don't have rubber or plastic feet, invest in some.
