Dumping syndrome is a group of gastrointestinal symptoms like abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. This disease occurs on account of rapid and uncontrolled movement of undigested food from stomach to small intestines. In most of the cases, symptoms usually start after eating. The movement of food from stomach to small intestines is controlled by vagus nerve. Any damage to this nerve can cause Dumping syndrome. The pylorus which is an opening between stomach and small intestines acts as a brake to regulate food movement. When it is damaged or removed during an operation, it can cause this disease. Dumping syndrome is usually managed by changes in dietary habits. In some cases, medications or surgery are required. Symptoms: - Symptoms usually occur during intake of food or within 15 to 30 minutes following the meals. They can be classified on the basis of location and severity. Gastrointestinal Symptoms:- 1.Nausea and vomiting 2.Abdominal cramps 3.Diarrhea 4.Feeling of fullness Cardiovascular symptoms:- 1.Facial Flushing 2.Dizziness 3.Fainting 4.Lightheadedness 5.Heart palpitations 6.Increased heart rate If a person has hyperglycemia, there is large amount of sugars in the intestines. As a result, pancreas secretes higher levels of insulin. It may cause lower than necessary levels of sugars in the blood (hypoglycemia). Because of fluctuations in sugar level, signs and symptoms of dumping syndrome may occur 1 to 3 hours after the meals. These symptoms are as follows:- 1.Hunger pangs 2.Sweating 3.Dizziness 4.Fatigue 5.Lightheadedness 6.Rapid heart beat 7.Fainting 8.Confusion Causes:- Gastric bypass surgery which is used as an efficient weight loss technique is a leading cause nowadays which causes dumping syndrome. People who have their stomachs or esophagus removed also experienced the symptoms. Symptoms may worsen after having a diet rich in sugars like fructose or sucrose. Dumping syndrome is usually observed within weeks after surgery when the individual resumes his normal diet. This condition may sometimes become a chronic disease. Risk factors:- 1.Gastrectomy: In this surgery the portion of stomach especially pylorus is removed. It may cause this condition. 2.Gastroenterostomy or gastrojejunostomy: - This surgery is usually performed for people who are diagnosed with stomach cancer. In this surgery, small intestine is directly connected to stomach and the pylorus is bypassed. Dumping syndrome may be a possible risk factor. 3.Vagotomy: - In this surgery, the vagus nerve in stomach is cut to reduce the acid levels in the stomach. Vagus nerve plays an important role in co-coordinating the emptying the stomach. Its absence may result into reduced control on emptying the stomach. 4.Fundoplication:-This operation is performed on people who have gastroesophageal reflux disease. In this operation pressure is applied by wrapping the portion of upper stomach to the lower part of esophagus. The pressure applied helps to reduce the acid reflex. If any stomach nerves are damaged during this surgery, it may cause dumping syndrome. 5.Gastric Bypass Surgery(Roux-en-Y operation):- This surgery is usually considered as weight loss surgery. In this surgery, size of stomach is reduced so that intake of food is reduced. Gastrojejunostomy is performed in this operation to connect small intestine to stomach pouch. 6.Esophagectomy:- In this operation, some part of esophagus or the entire tube is removed. 7.Certain underlying conditions as well as prescription medicines may also cause Dumping syndrome. They include •Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) •Diabetes •Zollinger-Ellison syndrome which triggers formation of peptic ulcers •Medicines which are used to treat nausea and vomiting, such as Metoclopramide.
