DEBRECEN, Hungary -- Led by recent university graduate KatinkaHosszu, host Hungary cleaned up with four golds and eight medalsoverall at the European Swimming Championships on Thursday. Hosszu claimed the 200-meter individual medley to add to her 400title from the opening night, then came back 90 minutes later andswam the anchor leg when Hungary took silver in the 4x200 relay. With Hungary President Janos Ader in attendance, the team's otherwinners were Daniel Gyurta, who improved his own championshiprecord in the 200 breaststroke; veteran Laszlo Cseh, who won the200 butterfly for his second gold of the meet; and 19-year-oldBoglarka Kapas, who took the grueling 800 freestyle. Also, Jonatan Kopelev won the 50 backstroke a non-Olympic event and the first ever gold in the competition for Israel; JennyMensing of Germany won the 100 backstroke; and a strong anchor legfrom world record-holder Federica Pellegrini pushed Italy ahead forgold in the 4x200 relay. Hosszu won the 200 IM in 2 minutes, 10.84 seconds. Sophie Allen,one of only five British athletes at the meet, took silver in2:11.49 and another Hungarian, Evelyn Verraszto claimed bronze in2:11.63. It didn't feel so good while I was swimming. For me, the 200 is alittle (tougher), said Hosszu, who will also race the 200 fly onSaturday. Hosszu graduated from the University of Southern California twoweeks ago and plans to continue training under Dave Salo, alongwith American standouts Rebecca Soni and Jessica Hardy. It's so good to go to practice. I don't have to try to motivatemyself, Hosszu said. I just look at one side and there's anOlympic champion, and the other side a world record-holder. Gyurta stopped the clock at 2:08.60, slicing 0.35 off his previousmark set in Budapest two years ago. Marco Koch of Germany tooksilver in 2:09.26 and Panagiotis Samildis of Greece claimed bronzein 2:09.72. Cseh, who won the 200 IM a day earlier, touched in 1:54.95 whichwould have been good for fourth at last year's worlds in Shanghai,although not a bad time two months before the Olympics. AnotherHungarian, Bence Biczo, took silver, and Ioannis Drymonakos ofGreece grabbed bronze. With 800 standouts Rebecca Adlington and Lotte Friis absent, Kapaswon the 16-lap event in 8:26.49, ahead of Coralie Balmy of Franceand yet another Hungarian, Eva Risztov. In the 50 breast, Kopelev clocked 24.73, Mirco Di Tora of Italytook silver and three swimmers shared bronze Dorian Gandin ofFrance, Guy Barnea of Israel and Richard Bohus of Hungary. The son of Russian immigrants, the 20-year-old Kopelev recentlycompleted military service in Israel and will begin swimming atOhio State University this year. Israel joined the European Swimming League in 1989. In the 100 back, Mensing touched in 1:00.08, Arianna Barbieri ofItaly took silver and Simona Baumrtova claimed bronze. In the relay, Hungary led until Pellegrini dove in and pushed theItalians ahead, touching in 7:52.90.
