During the early manufacture of steel bars, the process resulted in imprecise dimensions. This is largely the result of rough surface texture. At the time, the coarse and uneven surface was considered a consequence of the high finishing temperature necessary for hot rolling. However, as technological advances demanded higher precision with much stricter tolerances the industry began to develop processes to meet the demands. Bright steel bars have been cold finished. This is a process where hot rolled steel is drawn through a die to produce highly accurate dimensions and remove surface scale. The process yields product with a well defined shape and good surface finish that is required for sophisticated engineering applications. Bright steel bars are used in a multitude of manufacturing processes. Bright steel bars are an extremely important component in the manufacturing processes of the aerospace and automotive industry. They are used to produce engine components for both aircraft and automobiles. Every part of an airplane employees mechanisms comprised of Bright steel bars from the fuselage to the tail assembly. The landing gear is one of the most intricate aeronautical mechanisms and requires extremely tight tolerances that can only be accomplished with Bright steel bars. The struts, hydraulic arms and retracting mechanisms must meet highly specific criteria to meet the demands of the FAA. Automobiles also require stringent tolerances for steel components used in the transmission, suspension and steering mechanisms. Many hydraulic systems require Bright steel bars. Applications of fluid mechanics involving engineering devices typically require high quality steels to withstand high pressures. This includes components employed in applications involved in fluid flow such as pipes, storage dams, pumps and water turbines. Other mechanisms used for control of liquids such as nozzles, valves and jets also employ these high grade steels with specific tolerances. They are extremely important in the production of hydraulic actuators and presses. Examples include actuators such as those that operate braking systems on automobile and those that operate control flaps on airplanes. Bright steel drawn bars are vitally important to power production. The steels are used in steam turbines as well as the electric generators they operate. The steels are a component of the towers that suspend transmission lines. They also comprise many components of supplementary equipment in the electric distribution process such as transformers. Circuit breakers that protect the system from short circuits and overloads operate on a switch that is controlled by an actuator.
