The Class L girls tennis semifinals should have been about theplayers on the court, but was instead overshadowed by boorishbehavior from parents from both schools courtside, according toGreenwich coach Betsy Underhill . Greenwich beat visiting Newtown 4-3 to move on to the championshipFriday at Yale at 3 p.m. but after the match, everyone was talkingabout what happened off the court instead of what happened on it. "It was not pleasant," Underhill said. "It was heated on the court, but unfortunately also heated off the court.
We got to a pointwhere we had to tell parents not to cheer. It makes the playersuncomfortable and it is not fair to them. It was everything that iswrong with sportsmanship." The off court sideshow was punctuated by two fathers nearly comingto blows as Underhill stood between them, she said. According to Underhill, several parents were removed from courtsidebecause of their inability to properly control themselves at a highschool sporting event. On the court, Greenwich picked up wins from Claudia Kesala (6-1,6-3), Sam Stone (6-1, 6-2) and Danielle Cepelewicz (6-1, 6-0) insingles and the team of Julia Hyland and Mary Cecio (6-1, 6-4) in doubles.
Kesala, Stone and Cepelewicz have not lost all season but it wasthe win at No. 2 doubles by Hyland and Cecio that made Underhillthe most proud. "It was the deciding match and it was really nice for them,"Underhill said. "They have struggled a little the last few weeksand I was really pleased they pulled it out."
