The Ministry of Education has prohibited official announcementsfrom using "Taobao" style Chinese, stressing it is"unacceptable" in formal notices. The style, which oftensounds like an advertising pitch and is attributed to the namesakeonline shopping platform, was singled out in an annual report bythe ministry on Tuesday. Such messages usually begin with "Dear ," and then adopta personalized, sales-like tone. It became the subject ofcontroversy in August last year when a recruitment advertisementpublished by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was written in the"Taobao" style. The style was also used by Shanghaipolice in an arrest warrant, sparking public debate when thesuspect was referred to as "dear" and urged him to givehimself up, Beijing Daily reported. "The 'Taobao' style is unacceptable for official documents, such as police warrants that should be formal, notentertaining," Tian Lixin, deputy director of the ministry'sChinese Language and Information Administration Department, said. The report also highlighted nearly 600 buzzwords and phrases thatbecame popular last year. More than half were comprised of threecharacters, while four-character phrases accounted for just over 20percent. Some 21 new phrases contained letters, such as "4Dnewspaper" and "CDI" (Comprehensive DevelopmentIndex). The report also listed last year's most frequently used words andnames, including toppled Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, late Appleco-founder Steve Jobs, as well as "property tax" and"lean meat powder." Around 40 percent of the nearly 3,000 high-frequency phrases in theministry's 2006 report still made the list last year, the paperfound. Chen Rudong, a professor of Chinese studies at Peking University'sSchool of Journalism and Communication, told the Global Times thatthe report's findings reflected the "social phenomenon"behind the Chinese language. "The disappearance and emergence of words and phrases isclosely related to social change. Change within language hasaccelerated amid the globalization and development of newmedia," Chen said. "The 'Taobao' style cannot strictly be called a 'writingstyle' because it was created by Web users for fun. It isjustifiable for the Ministry of Education to issue such guidanceprohibiting this style in official communication because accuracyand succinctness are needed.".
