I’ve been curious about what direction Titleist would take following its purchase by Fila. Would it remain a course pro’s favorite, or slowly begin a decline into obscurity. The technologies in the AP1 712 seem to indicate that Fila is pushing forward with the product line. The cheap Titleist AP1 712 irons is a multi-material, dual cavity iron with the serious golfer’s look and feel. Internal weighting utilizes high density tungsten to distribute the mass to create higher moment of inertia without changing the center of gravity o rchanging the blade length. Titleist says that this higher MOI provides more consistent ball speed across the clubface and better distance control. All this, Titleist says, without sacrificing workability and shot control. The grooves on the Titleist AP1 712s are modified U grooves that conform with the R&A and USGA specifications. Titleist have managed to increase the MOI (Moment of Inertia) by 4% creating more forgiveness in the long irons, and higher ball speeds on off-center hits throughout the set. The progressively reduced blade length means improved feel and control with the short irons. The 712 AP1s have a traditional head-shape with a bevelled topline aimed to improve confidence at address. The stainless steel body and high-density tungsten sole weight in the AP1 712 irons offer increased forgiveness and feel, with a slightly different look. All that's due to a 25 percent thinner upper face, plus an average of 43 grams of tungsten weight that's lower and wider than in the best price titleist 712 ap2. Some tungsten, in fact, is co-forged into the hosel, which spreads mass more to the club's perimeter. A new undercut beneath the topline saves 10 grams. This mass contributes to a 28-gram tungsten toe weight [24 grams in AP1 712], which helps increase forgiveness, produce a higher flight, and generate 0.5 mph [approx.] faster ball speeds. A newly added support bar enhances impact feel while further lowering the CG. The short irons have a higher CG than existing AP1s, thanks to a thicker upper face, no topline undercut and no tungsten sole weight. It is a good looking iron. Fila has sent me some samples of their golf clubs for sale that I’ve loved. I wonder if I can get them to send a set of these for testing.
