Christmas 2013 is just around the corner. Taking an air tour of the Grand Canyon is the perfect holiday excursion, but you need to make plans now. The holidays are always busy at the Grand Canyon and since the airplane and helicopter tours are always so popular, you can bet they will fill up fast. The most popular place to catch an air tour is from Las Vegas, NV. If you will be in Arizona though, you can catch a tour out of Tusayan, which is near the South Rim. Here is a quick look at both locations. Vegas Air Tours You can go to the South or West Rim from Las Vegas. The South Rim is too far to go there by chopper though, so the Vegas helicopters only go to the West Rim. Airplanes go to both. Grand Canyon flights depart from various airfields around the metro Vegas area including Boulder City and Henderson. On the way to the canyon, the aircraft fly over the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, then they fly over the canyon and return, or they land at the top or bottom of the rim. The choppers and planes that depart from Vegas take a path the lets you see Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam, then they pass over the rim and head back or they stop and land at the rim. The trips that fly over are the cheapest option. However, if you really want the total package, consider a landing tour, especially one that lands at the bottom or another that lands at the top that includes the Grand Canyon Skywalk. Regardless which you choose, you can't go wrong. Choppers and airplanes follow the same flight path out of Vegas. You can also choose from tours that land and those that do not. I really like the tour that comes with the option to experience the Skywalk. There's another that includes a heli to the bottom with a boat ride. The Grand Canyon flights out of Vegas by plane that go to the South Rim are very interesting too. This is a great scenic flight. The flight to the rim takes an hour and once you get there, you have 2 ? hours to explore on the ground. South Rim South Rim helicopters are either 30 or 50 minutes in length. There is also a fifty minute airplane tour available that covers the same ground as the longer helicopter tour. The 30-minute trip goes from the South Rim to the North and back. It is one of the most popular tours and the least expensive. You can't land on the canyon floor or fly below the rim at the South Rim though because it is prohibited in that part of the Park. Weather Christmas in the winter so you should expect it to be pretty cool. The South Rim has a higher elevation so it is colder there than the West Rim. Be sure to look at the weather forecast before you depart for your tour so you know what to expect. Based on it, dress accordingly and don't assume that the inside of a helicopter and an airplane is impermeable to the cold (for the most part it's comfortably warm).
