On 26th December, a Long Island mother was arrested in Huntington after she allegedly drove drunk with her 7-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son in the car. In fact, routine stops for broken taillights, out-dated registration or even cracked windshields have been upheld across the country as sufficient cause for officers to detain individuals and then to check symptoms for driving under the influence. Petrus Jr. & Associates, P.C., http://www.petruslaw.com/practiceareas/dwi/) Her 7-year-old daughter suffered a serious head injury and her 5-year-old son a minor one after she lost control of her Mercury Mystique, left the roadway, struck a signpost and hit a tree. Both children, who were in the backseat and were not wearing proper child restraints, were taken to Huntington Hospital. The lady was not injured and was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child 15 years or younger (Leandra's Law), one count of DWI and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. She was held $2,500 bond, and the judge allowed her to keep kids.
