I have often said that it was less stressful taking my children, when they were young, to their various doctor appointments then when I have to take my dog to the vet. When I finally decided to adopt a dog, one of the biggest reasons in making my decision was that I have an excellent veterinarian all of five minutes from my house. I live in a tiny town so this is all the more wonderful, plus it is a large practice with several doctors. In fact, people from all over New York come to this practice. There have been a few times over the years when the doctor themselves have called me back to ask how my dog was doing after a visit! I don’t recall that my own personal physician has ever done that. There are doctors on call 24 hours, 7 days a week. Before I even brought my new puppy, Rosie, home, I had made the appointment for her check up. Make sure that you have all the information about your puppy with you that the breeder should have provided. And if you adopt a “rescue” dog, you will also want them to have a complete physical as soon as possible too. When Rosie’s doctor walked into the examining room, the doctor could tell in 5 minutes that Rosie needed to go to trainer. While that initially hurt my feelings...it was like you just brought a new baby home from the hospital and the grandmother says there is something wrong with just a glance! Needless to say, I quickly found a dog trainer from the list that the veterinarian provided. This was a relief because I knew that anyone on the list was approved by the vet. Happy to say that Rosie who was skittish meeting new people is coming along nicely. We went for an 8 week course where she (and I) learned to walk her on a leash, sit, lie down and to come besided becoming sociable. It was a great bonding experience, plus I had my husband and daughter come to the classes too. If you want your dog to be part of the family, then the family needs to be part of the training too! My older dog of 14 years really stresses out at vet visits. I have learned to check in at the desk and then depending on the weather, I put her back in the car and the nurse comes and gets us when the doctor is ready. Weather permitting, we walk around the grounds with Gracie being distracted by so many new smells. One of things I do enjoy at vet visits is seeing the other dogs in the waiting room. My vet has two waiting rooms. One is for cats and the other for dogs. I love seeing the different breeds up close besides all the new puppies coming in for their first visits. Make sure your best friend gets regular check ups and their shots up to date. And please purchase a SUV travel pet bed or crate with a crate pad for when you are driving your dog anywhere.
