Studying is a critical life skill, not just for surviving in high school and college, but also for flourishing in the real world. Surprisingly, many students are not specifically taught how to study or given different studying options so that they can find the method and routines that work best for their preferred learning style. For instance, many students stumble on studying through necessity. They have a history test in two days and need to “cram” in the information. They may throw open their book, skim the content and then assumed that they “studied”. Parents and teachers need to be mindful about teaching students good study habits in math at a young age. Even something as simple as eating a snack before studying and taking scheduled breaks can be powerful lessons. There are so many different ways to study. Some students learn best by rewriting their notes several times, while others prefer to use flash cards or to slowly read out loud. Teaching a lesson is one of the most powerful techniques to internalize information, so parents should regularly volunteer to play the role of student while their child “teaches”. There is no perfect way to study, but there are good habits that make studying easier and more effective. Guide children and students early -- even as early as elementary school -- so that they develop strong study habits as they progress to more difficult material in middle school and high school.
