Dictionaries define luxury as items that are not essential, yet bring comfort or pleasure. This definition allows each of us to personally define what luxury means to us. To some, luxury might be an occasional restaurant dinner or special vacation. This individualized perception leaves a wide swath for well-marketed but poor quality goods to tempt and tease our luxury sensor. However, a good baseline for luxury should be items that are built by better craftsman using the best quality materials. Let’s look at some examples. Apparently, according to Forbes Magazine, the financial markets also recognize extreme quality as the stock values of luxury brands are outperforming staple goods brands such as Wal Mart. The one consistent theme among the world’s luxury goods producers is the combination of rare quality materials placed in the hands of trusted and talented craftsman producing a limited number of finished goods. It’s unlikely that any true luxury product manufacturer could retool to produce basic or staple products without losing their entire workforce. Luxury buyers expect that they never will.
