According to security experts, they have stumbled upon a verycomplicated computer virus that is infecting computers in Iran andseveral other Middle Eastern countries. The magnitude of the virusis said to be twenty times that of Stuxnet, the malware thatimmobilized centrifuges in an Iranian nuclear plant. The new virus, dubbed as Flame, is the biggest and perhaps mostmultifaceted malware ever exposed. It is apparently being used forstate-sponsored cyber spying. Russian virtual research and security firm Kaspersky Lab revealedMonday that it had discovered a "cyber-spying virus" madeto gather and obliterate sensitive information, chiefly in theMiddle East. "The malware was discovered by Kaspersky Lab"s expertsduring an investigation prompted by the InternationalTelecommunication Union (ITU). The malicious program, detected asWorm.Win32.Flame by Kaspersky Lab"s security products, isdesigned to carry out cyber espionage. It can steal valuableinformation, including but not limited to computer displaycontents, information about targeted systems, stored files, contactdata and even audio conversations," a note on Kaspersky Lab"s website reads. The malware performs sophisticated functions, but experts said thatnone had come out to be destructive. The maker country of Flame remains anonymous, just like the creatorof Stuxnet. However, given the worm"s superiority, someexperts suspect the United States and/or Israel to be its designer. It should be noted that some attributes are common in both Flameand Stuxnet - which means that the country behind Stuxnet is mostlikely behind Flame. According to a report in the Washington Post , Flame possibly has been on the go for 5 to 8 years. The reportfurther stated that the virus employs five encryption processes, three compression methods and around five file formats. The methodby which it collects information includes sorting keyboard strokes, turning on microphones to document discussions and taking screenshots. According to a Forbes report , "U.N. atomic energy officials from the International AtomicEnergy Agency were not permitted to visit some Iranian nuclearpower sites. Iran, it is believed, is moving some of its uraniumenrichment deep underground, so it cannot be hit by a missilestrike. The only way to shut the program down, which is what TelAviv and Washington both want, is to attack it through the ether— by creating a virus smart enough to shut down systemswithout the systems analyst on site knowing that an intrusion hasoccurred and their systems were breached.".
