Transitioning into nursing homes is hard for the elderly who have been independent all their lives. Fear or resentment may arise and cause them to lash out. Some feel as if their family has abandoned them. When older family members need better and more attentive care, placing them in a friendly, loving environment becomes the best choice for many families. However, leaving simple little reminders they are still loved will be necessary to transition them into this new part of their life. At first, visits may be a little uncomfortable and hard. Letting them know that it is as hard for you as it is for them is important. Talk to them about their day and allow them to be angry if need be. You need to become comfortable being in the nursing home, as you will need to visit often. Eventually, as they adjust to their new home, the negative feelings may subside. A great idea to help them along this way is to have a weekly family dinner at the home. Being surrounded by family will let the person know they haven't been abandoned. Suggest they get involved in the activities hosted by the home, no matter what the state of their health. They can continue to be as busy as they were living on their own and maintain their interests. Pushing them into the community will give them a better sense of belonging than when they lived alone. People their age will be everywhere, and there is bound to be at least one fellow resident with something in common. Exercise will also keep their spirits up. When you visit, write down a list of events that are being hosted for the next week that has a combination of their interests. The family member may be grateful that you are trying to help them feel more comfortable. Pictures and belongings should be strategically placed when decorating their room. This is their new home and it should look as such. You can get them involved as much as possible when setting up the room. Sound excited and happy to be there. This is a new venture and should be treated as such. Although choosing nursing homes was hard, you shouldn't be upset or feel guilty. Be confident in your choice and try to help them understand this will be good for their health and mind. Although these little reminders can help, elderly family members will sometimes still harbor negative feelings. Always keep trying and do not give up. Continue visiting and planning family dinners. They may not tell you, but they will appreciate you being there for them. Nursing homes are not the end of the road, but rather a new adventure that you can help your family member through.
