The hum of society’s “relative” truth can put us in a more dangerous trance than we likely realize… There are many people that never actually understand the difference between “relative” truth and “absolute” truth. Clearly, this is not a straightforward subject! Truth be told, I did not really learn about this idea until a few years ago. Ever since then, I have more completely appreciated its magnitude. Here is my attempt to help you do the same... Truth Defined Webster’s defines TRUTH to be the real facts about something; the things that are true. It may seem quite transparent that truth is dependent on facts. So what’s the problem? Putting it simple, “truth” might not be true for people. The problem is that people like to create their own unique facts. Moreover, they tend to do this in such a way that supports their individual wants and needs, what is handiest for them, as well as what they like to do or say. We have heard how truth is often defined by our personal thoughts of reality. We have observed the law develop a new truth with cases like the redefinition of the word “marriage” to not be unique to a relationship between a man and a woman. We have heard that three eyewitnesses to the same automotive accident may recall various and contradictory “facts” about what they witnessed! Relativism Considering these and other realities, many people have all but abandoned the idea that an individual truth even can be found. The term created for this philosophical view is “relativism”, and its influence is all over in our society. There exists real and present threat that what is prevalent inside the modern culture in which we live can literally brainwash us beyond being righteous. The greatest threat to you and your loved ones about relativism is that you may not actually understand or know you may be a subscriber! Society has such deeply ingrained relativism, we have to be very mindful our own perspectives of the world are not thoughtlessly aligned along with a relativist approach. Permit me to provide you with a number of examples to illustrate: It’s okay taking pens and pencils home from the office considering the fact that all my co-workers do… It’s okay to consume alcoholic drinks during my high school years because all of my friends do… It’s fine to sleep with my fiancé because we are planning marriage soon… Absolute Truth Which brings us to our alternative choice… a singular barometer against which to determine all ideas, observations, and behaviors. A significantly less baffling choice called Absolute Truth. Absolute truth, as its name indicates, is a concept that has revealed there in fact is a singular truth within and about all things. In other words, there is not a flexible scale by which to measure matters. Rather, there exists a single yardstick by which to evaluate everything. That measuring stick is God’s Word! The Word of God, as presented to all mankind within the text of the Bible, professes one truth that is absolutely consistent for the duration of many hundreds of pages as well as over thousands of years. If you decide to utilize the Bible as your personal reference handbook for truth, I promise you you will not be disappointed. Rather, you begin to discover a degree of wisdom and understanding that you have never before encountered. Let me give you an illustration. While we tend to grow up and presume a big part of life is seeking the accumulation of “stuff”, especially in Western heritage, we have 1 Timothy 6:7 to help remind us… ”For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.” Here is a nice profound piece of absolute truth for you to consider when the world is screaming that you need some new clothes, a new car, or some new furniture for the front room. Moreover, revisiting our list from above, we approach our choices more righteously: I should not steal anything, regardless of how big or small... I should follow all laws within the society wherein I live (assuming they do not dishonor God)... I should not have intimate relations away from the bounds of matrimony... Finding Help! So how will any of us remain on guard? Quite simply, we have to read the Bible and do this on a regular basis! Or as it states inside the book of Joshua 1:8, “...meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it; then you will be prosperous and successful”.
