If you're plagued by large swarms of cockroaches, your first thought may be to call an exterminator ... but think again. Not only is pest control service expensive, but — if you live in an apartment and the exterminator doesn't fumigate every unit in your building — the roaches will simply move next door until the fumes die down, then come back (along with their new friends) to your place. |
Prevent re-infestation. A clean house is key to keeping cockroaches away. Refer to a professional exterminator for faster treatment. A seasoned professional can usually eradicate a roach infestation faster than a homeowner by virtue of experience.
Then again, if you don't much like the idea of dusting or spraying your apartment or house with toxic chemicals, you may want to put out a small amount of poison bait for the roaches to nibble on. Frequently, sodium fluoride is recommended for this purpose, since roaches will walk on it, lick it off their feet (yes, these insects clean themselves just as cats do), and — shortly thereafter — die. In all honesty, though, I haven't had much success with this method ... and (because sodium fluoride is highly poisonous) it definitely should NOT be used by anyone with pets or small children.
A mixture of borax and sugar will also kill cockroaches ... but again, this is something that should not be used in a dwelling where dogs, cats, or infants live.
But there is a way! Even for those of you who do have youngsters and/or pets. The most effective (and safest) way to exterminate roaches is by putting out dishes of baking soda. When the slender brown bugs consume even the tiniest amount of this substance, they get gassy ... and — since they can't burp — their innards explode.
Use a professional product. You can find many professional products online. Professional baits, glue traps with pheromones, and professional sprays are far more effective then products bought at a local home store. If you buy an exterior bug spray, it will work inside much better. To spray it, put it in a spray bottle or a pump-up pressure bottle and spray the solution in the kitchen cabinets clockwise while holding your breath. Spray quickly and run out and leave the windows closed for a day. Reapply bait to avoid re-infestation by new hatchlings.
Re-bait three to four weeks after the initial treatment, to ensure that new roach hatchlings have fresh, palatable bait on which to feed and kill themselves. German cockroaches are often elusive, reproduce quickly, and pose numerous health hazards. For these reasons, it is most effective to allow a professional pest control to handle their extermination.
Cockroaches can thrive on very little food and water and will multiply in a short amount of time. The best steps for avoiding an infestation of cockroaches in your home are to make sure to keep your home as clean as possible. Keeping your home free of food particles is the absolute best way to keep the cockroaches out.
