The weekend typically known as the kickoff to the camping seasongot a major boost Friday, as the province lifted a largescale fireban imposed earlier in the week. The Victoria Day long weekend is seen as a chance to shake off thelast vestiges of winter and get outdoors for a head-start onsummer. The fire ban - which was imposed due to wildfire risk and covered alarge swath of the province's forests stretching from the northernboundary of Waterton Lakes National Park to north of Fort McMurray- would have put a damper on many people's plans, but recent rainand lower temperatures have reduced the fire risk. The national parks were not included in the provincial ban, butStuart Back - spokesman for Banff Lake Louise Tourism - said heexpects the lifting of the ban could drive up visitor numbers inall outdoor areas. "We didn't have an issue here in the park, but from aprovincewide awareness point of view, I believe it will make adifference," Back said. "I'm sure it's going to be agreat weekend in Banff-Lake Louise. This is that great time of yearwhen you can do anything from road biking and hiking to skiing. It's all on offer." While the May long weekend has a history of offeringless-than-ideal weather in Alberta, Environment Canada is callingfor clear skies and temperatures in the mid to high teens. With that in mind, there will be plenty to do in and around thecity this weekend - and a few indoor options, just in case. At Heritage Park, the first 500 guests through the gates between 9:30 and 10: 30 a.m. on Monday will enjoy a complimentary pancakebreakfast with their paid admission. "Everything's back," said Heritage Park spokeswomanSandra Kam. "We've got the boat in the water, the train willbe running, the horse wagon rides will be going." Canada Olympic Park is opening its zipline, summer bobsled ride andminigolf course today, and public tours of the ski jump towerbegin. The park is expected to be busy all weekend, so advancebookings are recommended. A bit farther afield, the Royal Tyrrell Museum near Drumheller isalso hosting a long weekend special event. Today, the museum will unveil a newly named, 75-million-year-oldmarine reptile skeleton. The "elasmosaur" was uncoverednear Lethbridge in 2007. For those who aren't quite ready to let go of their winter sports,Banff's Sunshine Village ski resort will host its 84th annual SlushCup on Monday. Individuals will be skiing or riding into a pool ofice-cold slush water. Those not so keen on getting wet are welcometo join the audience and cheer on participants. With so much activity taking place, the May long weekend isexpected to be a busy one for police. Sgt. Roger Waidson of the Cochrane RCMP said Albertans shouldexpect to see a large law enforcement presence on roads and inrecreational areas. The Cochrane detachment will have its policeboat out on Ghost Reservoir this weekend. "There'll be checkstops, there'll be lots of enforcement onthe highways. And in addition, we'll have four-wheel-drive vehiclesand ATVs out in the areas that are less accessible to people,"Waidson said. "For everyone to have fun, but be safe - that's the bigmessage." Calgary Transit will provide a Sunday level of service on VictoriaDay, with regular service resuming on Tuesday.
