While teaching literature, have them illustrate a scene from a book. Showing your tutee a subject from a different angle can help them learn the subject on a deeper level. They'll be more excited to be there if you make learning fun. If you are working with a group of students, set the basic parameters for different learning techniques and methods then have them decide how they want the tutoring session to go. For example, set the rules for a discussion period, oversee it, but allow the students to guide the conversation. They need to have control over what they're learning and how they learn it. You are there to mediate and bring them to the right conclusions. As you develop your method, always get feedback from the tutee. This shows that you really care about their education.
