Red dot sights are found nowadays in huge numbers in military, law enforcement, competition shooters and avid hunters. These are, in fact, manufactured in high numbers and outstanding qualities. Two brands that stand out in this regard: Aimpoint and Eotech. Although this is a comparative study but we are not getting into a wading war about these two brands. Before we get into the differences let us find out about the similarities. To begin with these are both rugged and reliable to the point of near-indestructibility, and they are both used in large numbers by our armed forces and police. The Eotech and Aimpoint Red Dot Sights are quite costly and for those who can afford these models, you should know that these are worth every penny. Now let us get into the details. The Aimpoint Red Dot Sights are smaller and lighter and this makes them a better choice for fitting on several carbines and rifles. Their batteries last so long that after two or three new batteries you’ll probably need to replace the rifle the Aimpoint is attached to. On the other hand, Eotech offers a quicker targeting. Users love its huge target window and excellent reticule. Weight is another factor when you are considering an Aimpoint vs Eotech review. Eotechs are tall and bulky for most other rifles. However, this is not true for the Aimpoint.
If you consider the construction part then both the brands offer ample lens protection and robust cases. For instance, the EOTech XPS weighs 8 ounces, while an Aimpoint T1 with a tall mount weighs about 6 ounces. The elevation adjustments and windage on Aimpoint Red Dot Sights are under aluminium caps, while on the Eotech they are out in the open on the side of the unit. Whether such adjustments suit you depends largely on the personal preference. Similarly the brightness adjustment appears as a twist knob on Aimpoint and as a push button on Eotech. From convenience point of view the only advantage for Aimpoint is that it will not be bumped accidentally. When it comes to the mounting system the Eotech has its mounting system built into the unit. On the other hand there are several varieties of mounts for Aimpoints, including 1:30 type mounts for a cant type setup, various heights so you can use the standard lower 1/3 cowitness for an AR.
Finally we reach about the reticle. The Aimpoint is a reflex sight and Eotech is holographic. If you consider the practical usage then there is not much difference between the two as both are nearly parallax free. The reticles on Aimpoints are a 2 or 4MOA dot, while the EOTech is a 1 moa dot surrounded by a 65MOA ring. Once you have decided upon this, the durability part is hard to determine.
But there is one point where Aimpoint scores over Eotech is its battery life. In this department Aimpoint edges past Eotech sights. The EOTechs also automatically turn off after a set amount of hours. Here’s a quick overview of the specifications for both the brands:
