When you own a home there are lots of projects that will need to be done. There are little projects like yard maintenance to big projects like driveway paving. The little projects can be indoor or outdoor, as can the big projects. There are some that are pretty common and others that you will not encounter very often. When all is said and done though there are a few things you just need to remember to do. Some of the basic things that you need to take care of include just regular maintenance of your furnace. While this is nothing like doing a big driveway paving project it can be critical to your home and the longevity of your furnace. Since a furnace isn't cheap you want to make sure that the one you have will last as long as possible. This means that you need to clean the filters each year and check to see if rather than cleaning them they need to be replaced. Another thing that you need to do is the check the seals around your windows and doors. Overtime the seals may crack or become less effective at sealing out the cold air. This means that you need to take the time to inspect all your windows and your doors carefully. If you find a seal that looks somewhat suspect then you need to take the time to caulk around the seal. If you do this each year you will make sure that your homes stays warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Cleaning and staining your outdoor wood is a project that many forget to do. You need to pressure wash and clean your deck paving at least every other year. After you do this then you will need to restain the deck so that it is again protected from the elements. If you do this you will have a deck that lasts a very long time. The same can be said for wood fencing. You probably don't need to pressure wash your wood fencing every other year, but you should try stain it periodically. Big projects that are far less common include replacement of main water lines. This sort of thing is only necessary in older homes most often. It is also something that if you end up needing to do this you shouldn't have to do it again. If you live in an older home though where the water line has not been replaced then you will want to periodically compare your water statements. If you notice an increase in your water use, but there have been no additional people or circumstances that have increased the use, then it is likely you have a leak in your waterline somewhere.
