The FDA is a very powerful American approval body. It decides whether or not a drug is safe enough to go on the market. Again, like academia and research institutes, for their own manipulation and control the pharmaceutical companies have provided funds for this body to fill the gaps left by government cuts. This may have saved taxpayers money, but this gain is far outweighed by the loss of public freedom of enterprise and the chances of having a broader perspective on health where many more lives could be saved through alternative approaches. The same situation, in principle, applies to all other industrialised nations, who have their equivalent approval bodies. For example, the British equivalent is the Medicines Control Agency (MCA). Like Big pharma, the FDA has perceived alternative medicine as a financial threat. Consequently, they have had a hand in suppressing the efficacy of cheaper, natural and alternative medicine and had a successful involvement in the huge rises in the prices of vitamin and mineral supplements over the last few years. Care of the paid off media, big pharma has managed to get away with unjust ridicule said of alternative medicine. Even though there are many personal case testimonials to be found from these approaches, not to mention the backing from eminent scientists in support of the theories. As pointed out by Dr Herbert Lay "What the food and drug administration does and what the public thinks that it does are as different as night and day." -This was pointed out by him during testimony before a senate investigation. More inside jobs The FDA has more than its fair share of biased representatives; people tied to drug industries. It is supposed to be protecting the public, but once again, dangerous products have been allowed to get on the market due to vested interest. An article in 'USA Today' featured an investigation carried out on the FDA meetings. It was found that out of the 159 meetings held from 1st January to 30th June 2000, a number of attendees expressed a conflict of interest due to financial ties with pharmaceutical companies: -At 92% of the meetings, at least one member had a financial conflict of interest. -At 55% of meetings, half or more of the FDA advisors had conflicts of interest. -Conflicts were most frequent at the 57 meetings when broader issues were discussed: 92% of members had conflicts. -At the 102 meetings dealing with the fate of a specific drug, 33% of the experts had a financial conflict. -See USA Today article by Dennis Cauchon, 'FDA Advisors Tied to the Industry' 25th September 2000 Unfortunately, because of these commercial ties, decisions made regarding clinical trials and what drugs will go on the market are not in the best interest of the public. Profits are put before people and the advancement of scientific research and medicine has been severely compromised. It has been suggested that the solution is to weaken financial incentives for academics, researchers and advisory board members. But can this really be done? Education not medication Please, wake up from the consensus trance and realise before it's too late that your health is in your hands. Learn to educate yourself and the ones you dearly love. By now, it's more than apparent that the powers that be don't want you to stay well or get cured: Too much money is riding for them in the sickness business. If you are unwell, they offer treatment that does not make you to live longer. Nor does it give you better quality of life.
