What we tend to find on our schools here at the Faldo Institute by Marriott is that a lot of common faults are a direct result of players using grips that are either too big or too small. Pavin started fast with a 4-foot birdie putt on the first hole and had long birdie putts of 12 feet at No. 5 and 25 feet at No. 7 to make the turn at 3 under with cheap Callaway X Hot Irons.
If you are comfortable with your golf grip and you can freely swing the cheap Ping G25 Irons without feeling any discomfort, then you might just be griping the club just right. The first test of having a good grip is whether you are comfortable playing with such a grip or not. There is no point trying to copy the grip of golf masters if you are not comfortable with it. However, hats that fit too tightly cause constant traction around the sides of the head, resulting in thinning in those areas. This applies also to turbans and yarmulkes.
Because of the larger sole design of the long irons at address the 4 and 5 iron the back of the sole can be seen just behind the top line. To some golfers this can be a distraction, but with most golfers now playing hybrids that may no longer be the case. I did not find this a distraction while I was using the irons.
In conclusion, I really like and highly recommend the X Hot. They are not only long, but also very forgiving and straight. If you are struggling with your own Titleist 913F Fairway Wood, I would say give these a try. They are so long and easy to hit that it feels like I am cheating on other players with regular woods!
