Bald Men vs. Men With Hair: Appearance and Perception - Part 2

Fashion & Cosmetics
How Females Perceived Baldness: How Baldness Can Be An Attractive Attribute of a Man I previously wrote an article on the perception of bald men vs. men with hair in reference to a study that found bald men to be less attractive than men with hair. But is this really the case? Firstly, the study’s participants were both male and female, so how do females only perceive the attractiveness of bald men? Balding vs. Bald Men For men who don’t choose to be bald, but have it thrown on them by nature, the general female consensus is that bald is far more attractive than balding. A bald man tends to portray confidence, something projected by his ability to own the aging process and shave his head completely. In contrast, a large bald spot or (even worse!) a comb over as I remember my Grandfather practicing, can reflect characteristics, which whilst not always reflective of the man, portray somewhat unattractive traits. Women admire a man who can take care of his appearance, if not for her then for himself. A balding man can often appear as if he doesn’t care how he looks or can’t be bothered to look after himself, and whilst it is okay to not let yourself be worn down by the opinions of others, females tend to see a lax in self-care as laziness or a lack of effort. Neither of which are attractive. A man who takes care of his appearance is an attractive quality in the eyes of a female. Which is where the shaven head can come in so important! A balding man who shaves his head to become bald has acknowledged that he needs to be in control of his ageing, or hair condition, and a man in control is very appealing to women. Baldness as a Sign of Maturity Whilst there are plenty of ‘mature’ and socially perceived attractive celebrities who have a full head of hair (George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp), a bald head is often associated with maturity and life experience. We’ve all heard the stereotype of the ‘silver fox’, those men who whilst ageing still exude sex appeal. Much of this stereotype has to do with those men being perceived by women as more settled and stable as the carefree younger man. An aged look projects experience, knowledge, and comfort, in comparison to the attraction of an immature man personified with a full head of hair, perceived as both fun yet unstable. Attractive Traits of The Bald Man Attractiveness whilst an appealing characteristic in the eyes of women, is often rated in line with a woman’s preference and is therefore difficult to measure. Bald men however tend to project a whole host of characteristics. Take for example the intellect and public appeal of Sir Patrick Stewart, the physically attractive attribute of Dwayne Johnson (also know as ‘The Rock’), or the masculine and dominating appeal of Vin Deisel. And for females, intellect, physical dominance and masculinity far outweigh a full head of hair. Suzanne Beck fashion advice for big and tall men thoughts from a females perspective
