Some of the most common residential intruders include ants, bed bugs, fleas, cockroaches, mosquitoes, termites, spiders, and mice. When we think of pest control, we often think of these insects and uninvited furry guests, but there are numerous other creatures that can invade your home. Pest management professionals can be called for any creature that presents a threat to your health or home. The creatures that invade your home will differ from region to region. Florida The Burmese Python is a highly invasive species originally from South Asia. These snakes can grow to be 20 feet long, hence their standing among the top five largest snakes in the world. However, during the 1980s and 90s, the snakes became a quick favorite for exotic pets. Once introduced to the semi-aquatic environment of the everglades, they proved evolutionarily successful. Since their first sighting in the everglades in 1979, there numbers have increased. Now, there are thousands of Burmese Pythons around Florida. Arizona (And Really Anywhere but Antarctica!) Scorpions are a distant cousin of spiders, with eight legs and a venomous stinger. With more than 17,000 species of scorpions, these arachnids range in size, shape, and color. However, only 25 species have proven deadly to humans. In Arizona especially, bark scorpions can meander into residential areas. This species is a light brownish color (to match the surrounding desert) and is two to three inches long. Texas Fire ants have a reputation for being particularly pesky. These little insects can pack a mean punch with their alkaloid venom. The sensation is comparable to a small burn and cause significant irritation. The infected areas should be left alone so as to minimize the risk for the infection to spread. These creatures, along with many others represent the greater need for pest control services. Depending on where you live, there may be specific services for "abnormal" animals, such as a wildlife foundation. However, while waiting for pest control services, it is best to remove your family from the home. Often, the issue is much larger than it appears, as it take a trained professional to see the extent of the invasion. Call pest control as soon as you discover the problem. Do not try to handle the situation on your own. Pest control specialists are trained to handle both an insect and vermin invasion in a way that best suites the family, the home, and the animal itself. Calling sooner is always better than later.
