American Women Successful at Blackjack Game American women are just as good as men at learning the blackjack rules and strategies and playing to win at the game. Eleanore Dumont – A Card Player and A Character Having moved from New Orleans to San Francisco in 1849, she began her career at the Blackjack table as a dealer in the Bella Union Hotel. History and legend has it that she became quite adept at this trade rather quickly. She was let go from this position and many say it was due to a suspicion of cardsharping. This seems to go against her life long reputation as dealing honestly and always paying her debts that is seen to be an important ingredient in her many successes. Born around 1829, Eleanore was the first notable professional Blackjack game player of the feminine gender. What a character! The stories about her leave one both inspired and saddened. The highs of her life were high and the lows were low. From San Francisco, she move to Nevada City, CA in 1854 where, to the surprise of most people in that town, she opened a gambling establishment called Vingt-et-un on Broad Street. Matching her fine style, it was a classy place, clean, carpeted with gas chandeliers. Only the well behaved and well groomed men were allowed to play in her gambling parlor. Her witty and vivacious nature attracted a large number of players, even though the game Faro was actually more popular than Black Jack at the time. It is important to note her significant role in popularizing the game of Black Jack over the many other possible games. This parlor became enough of a success to allow her to take on a partner, opening a larger establishment that offered a variety of games going on day and night. As this was in the middle of the gold rush in the Wild West, when the gold ran out in this mining town, she moved her business to Columbia, CA in 1857. A couple of years following this venture, she attempted to retire from the life by buying and running a ranch in Carson City, Nevada. So far, her journey was inclined upwards, but things turned at this point. She fell in love with a man that swindled her out of her money and property and she had to re-enter the business she knew best – Vingt-et-un or Blackjack. After this time, she never realized the glamour and success that she had experienced in prior years at the Blackjack table. Moving from one mining town to the next, she reportedly added a brothel to her repertoire. A shrewd business woman and a tough character, she kept going. One night in 1978, in Bodie, CA she borrowed some money from a friend to open a table. Upon losing the bank, she quietly left by the back door, walked a mile or so out of town and took her life by drinking wine that contained enough morphine to do her in. She was definitely a legend in the western story of Blackjack. Alice Walker – Blackjack & Poker Alice Walker, a beautiful black woman became known in the world of blackjack when she won $500,000 in the World Series of Blackjack in 2007. Growing up in Houston TX, she learned to play at the age of 13. Throughout her years, she excelled and won at both blackjack and poker. Joanna Wlodawer – High Stakes A versatile young lady with a degree in journalism, biology and chiropractic, Joanna Wlodawer became serious in blackjack in the 1990s when she was part of a successful high-stakes blackjack team. She entered the tournament scene in 2004 and appeared in GSN’s World Series of Blackjack, The Ultimate Blackjack Tour and the King of Vegas TV show. Modern Women in Blackjack Cathy Hulbert – Card Counting A New Yorker, Cathy Hulbert paid for her college education playing blackjack and working as a blackjack dealer. In her twenties, she learned card counting and was part of a successful million dollar European team. She later became part of the renowned US team led by Ken Uston. Erica Schoenberg – Card Counting A striking model, personal trainer and volleyball player, Erica Schoenberg also learned blackjack at an early age and learned card counting from a member of the MIT blackjack team. She won tournaments in both blackjack and poker and became popular in the Ultimate Blackjack Tour TV show on CBS in 2006 and 2007. Modern women in blackjack on the other hand became popular primarily though tournaments that were promoted through mass media. In many cases, just to make it into the selection process, these women had to be good looking and charming as well as intelligent and possessing a good aptitude for blackjack.
