A MAN who allegedly raped and killed three women in Shanghai and neighboring Jiangsu Province over the past four years has been detained, police said yesterday. The man, surnamed Wu, a bus driver from Wuxi City in Jiangsu Province, is said to have pretended to ask for directions in remote suburban areas and coaxed the women onto his bus. Police said Wu was facing charges of raping three women, killing them and dumping their bodies. The case came to light on March 18 when the body of a 22-year-old woman surnamed Zhang was found in a greenery area under the elevated highway near Huaxia Road in the Pudong New Area, police said. "There were bruises on the victim’s nose and neck and an examination showed that the girl had been suffocated to death,” said a police medical examiner. “Suspicious seminal stains were found on the victim’s body and we believed she had been sexually assaulted before death.” The investigation showed that Zhang had been murdered the previous day and her body dragged to the greenery area from elsewhere. Zhang was last seen leaving home for work at around 6:30am on March 17. Her family told police that Zhang had recently come to Shanghai and always took the same route to work, a couple of minutes’ walk. Checking the surveillance cameras around Zhang’s home, the police had their suspicions about a bus. It first showed up at 7:34am on Zhang’s route to work and again at 8:13. The bus was later spotted near where Zhang’s body had been dumped. Police found the bus was used to carry tourists between Wuxi and Shanghai and the driver that morning was Wu. Meanwhile, DNA tests showed that the murder suspect was the same man who had raped and killed two young women in Wuxi in 2009 and 2011. Wu was caught by police on March 20 in a bath house in Wuxi and immediately confessed to all three killings, police said. According to police, Wu, 37, said he met his first victim in November 2009. "I struck up a conversation with her and asked her for directions. She was going to the same residential area as me,” Wu told police. "So I offered her a ride.” Wu later raped the victim, killed her with a knife and dumped her body in a green belt beside a road, police said. "After that, every time I drove alone, I would get scared, so I later changed that bus,” Wu said. But that fear did not stop Wu, it is alleged, and he went on to commit two more murders.
