Manacor is Mallorca's second largest city, set in the region of Llevant. Located around 30 miles from Palma de Mallorca, and with approximately 30,000 inhabitants, it is home to a variety of public bodies serving the region, and is also a commercial centre for all neighbouring villages. Manacor is arguably most famous for its artificial pearl industry, with the first ever factory being set up in 1902 by German industrialist Eduard Frederic Hug Heusch. In 1952, the factory launched its new pearl, named "Mallorca", which was of a much higher quality than other artificial pearls found on the market. Every day, hundreds of tourists now visit the two-storey pearl showroom to see how the town's best-known export is produced. Mallorca's artificial pearl industry produces around 50 million pearls per year - said to be identical to the real thing, and almost the same price. They are made using fish scales, so probably best avoided by vegetarians. This industrial town is also known for its furniture production, known as "mobles". Many Mallorcan residents and tourists travel to Manacor to buy their furniture. Despite the lack of obvious monuments and sights, it is well-worth having a wander down the narrow lanes behind the city's church, to take in the atmosphere of every-day island living. Every Monday is market day in Manacor, situated in Placa Ramon Llull, and there is also a daily vegetable market behind the church in Placa de la Constitucio. Although the town has a somewhat uniform layout, it does hold a certain character, especially around Placa de les Verdures (translating as "the square of vegetables"). Many quality vineyards dot the immediately surrounding countryside of Manacor, as well as many prehistoric archaeological remains, showing the area has been inhabited since ancient times. A must-see is the Museu d'Historia de Manacor which displays Bronze Age, prehistoric and early Christian artefacts. If you are looking to re-fuel in Manacor, one of the best eateries is Ca'n March. A family-run restaurant, they specialise in hearty Med-Mallorcan fare, with their strong point being fresh fish, high-quality meats, a range of paellas and homemade desserts. There is a set menu on offer, as well as a menu of the day. Manacor has become more well-known recently due to tennis superstar Rafael Nadal. It was his birth town, and he still lives here (when not playing tennis around the world) with his family. Manacor is not a destination typically on the tourist map however for those who chose to find Property For Sale in Mallorca then this is a place well worth consideration.
