EHS positions, otherwise known as Environmental Health & Safety positions, are hard to fill because there are not a lot of people who have majored in the required areas of school. As a result, there are not many people with the necessary credentials to fill a position. Many people assume that they can fill a position, however, so you end up with a lot of resumes – and none of them are quality ones. This can make it very difficult to fill an open spot within your organization. The traditional way of hiring EHS positions would go something like this: 1. Create a job description 2. Post the job opening 3. Obtain resumes 4. Conduct interviews 5. Review backgrounds 6. Make an offer These six steps can be very time-consuming. Most likely, you have an EHS position that needs to be filled right away to avoid problems on premises. This means that you cannot wait weeks or months in order to fill the position. You need to pass some of the responsibilities off to someone else to reduce the amount of time it takes to find a qualified candidate. The trick is to pass off as much of the work of recruiting to someone who is familiar with EHS positions – and who already has connections in place. The more you can pass off, the less you have to do – and this frees you up to do other important things within your operation. Recruiting companies can be a godsend when it comes to finding EHS positions for you. You tell them some basics like: - How much you want to pay - What the job description is - When you need them The recruiter will then go in search of the ideal candidate for you. They may already have some candidates to pull from. If they don’t (or none meet your needs) they will be the ones to post the job openings and collect the resumes so you don’t have to be bothered with the whole process. The recruiter is also the one that will cut the resumes and dig through the pile to find you qualified ones that will be a good fit within your organization. The EHS candidates that you ultimately end up with will work for your organization. Each of them will have already been interviewed. They will all be capable of doing the job description that you have created. All you have to do is determine which one you want to hire simply because you are the one that gets final say over who works for your organization and who doesn’t. The next time you have an opening in your environmental health & safety department, you have a choice to make. You can spend several weeks recruiting on your own or you can place one call to a recruiter to get help. It all depends on how fast you want the person and how much work you want to do in order to get the person.
