You may have heard the names Monsanto and DuPont in the news recently. They are both major players that affect food around the globe. Without realising it, you’re already consuming food every day that uses Monsanto or DuPont’s products so it’s a good idea to know who you’re dealing with. Your health is at risk, so let’s get to the root of the issue. Who is Monsanto? You may already be familiar with a product called Roundup – a popular weedkiller made by Monsanto. What you may not know is how they’re linked to your food. Everyday we’re consuming chemically laced, highly processed and modified foods whether we know it or not. Monsanto is a leader in those modified foods. Monsanto is an American company that specialises in chemical production and biotechnology in agriculture. It’s a multi-billion dollar company with its roots in numerous countries. They started as a chemical company, but quickly shifted into agriculture. These industries are not independent of one another as their chemical sprays are being used on their GMO crops. Monsanto are pioneers in the world of GMO’s (genetically modified organisms). They are modifying anything from corn to wheat to soy to canola and more. The problem is, these products are rarely consumed on their own. Corn for instance is found in a copious number of products as the main ingredient, it’s actually quite scary! The same can be said about soy, or any of the other modified foods. Not only do they provide GMO seeds and plants, they provide all the pesticides to spray on them. When crops are sprayed, it not only affects the soil, it becomes a part of our food. Chemicals like glyphosate are sprayed on crops and have been directly linked to cellular damage.1 There are more diseases present within our society than ever before and much of it is directly related to the foods we’re consuming. Chemicals in our food are being linked to cancer, birth defects, infertility and many other ailments. DuPont DuPont is another American chemical company involved in biotechnology that has facilities in over 70 countries. DuPont’s market capitalisation in the chemical industry is ranked third worldwide! They have been known to take many of their highly processed products and market them as ‘healthy’. This is plain wrong and misleads people into making poor dietary choices thinking a single healthy ingredient makes the whole product healthy. For instance a product may be marketed as being healthy because it has vegetables in it, and is low in calories. Unfortunately, there’s a good chance that the ‘healthy’ ingredient is highly modified and processed. Not only is DuPont involved in harming us directly through our food they are also responsible for creating Teflon. Teflon is the non-stick coating that is applied to pots and pans. When you cook with non-stick plans that have this coating, you’re at risk for damaging your liver and immune system. Teflon has also been associated with decreased thyroid function, smaller birth weights and cancer.2 So How Can We Avoid These Chemicals? Monsanto and DuPont are likely to be around for the rest of your lifetime and are near impossible to avoid. Some of the companies that use Monsanto and DuPont products include: Heinz, Kelloggs, Cadbury, Unilever, Kraft, Coca Cola, Pepsi, the list goes on. The first step is awareness. Knowledge is power and our community needs to be know what’s going on so share this with loved ones. The next step is making small changes to steer away from these chemical laced foods by eating more raw, natural food. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables will help you avoid these nasties as much as possible and will keep you much healthier and happier. The best thing to do of course is to grow your own food. I know we all live such busy lives but starting with growing your own herbs is a great idea. Herbs are easy to grow and maintain and don’t take up a lot of room. Start here and hopefully you can move onto vegetables and fruit. There’s nothing better than harvesting your own produce and knowing you’re putting something healthy and organic into your body.
