All the Coins: The Five Most Popular Arcade Games of All-Time

Business
With the video game world currently in the throws of yet another console war, it's hard for this younger generation of game players to imagine a time when their games wouldn't have been so easy to access. Once upon a time, you had to leave your house, and go to the local arcade and dump coins into giant wooden boxes in order to play the latest and greatest in gaming. So what games captivated audiences way back in the dark times known as the 80's? You'll have to read on to find out.

Ms. Pac-Man

She was a yellow dot with a bow on her head that ate dots and ran from ghosts. Doesn't quite sound like the makings of a mega-hit but Ms. Pack-Man was one of the most popular games in the world. The game was so engrossing that local eateries that had the game would see a huge spike in business but only in the form of coins that were put into the machines. There was even a table version of the arcade created so that people would actually get food while playing since they finally had somewhere to put their plates and cups.

Star Wars

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, movie tie-ins were few and far between. Nowadays, you can expect every moderately known movie to have some sort of licensed game released with it. That wasn't the case back in 1983, when the Star Wars arcade game was released. Players got to pilot the X-Wing and blow up the Death Star just like Luke Skywalker. Any spare coins found near a Star Wars fan, were going right into this bad boy. Play this game they did.

Donkey Kong

Before he was the worldwide phenomenon who used his head to smash coins out of brick, Mario was Jumpman, a nondescript man in overalls trying to save a woman from a giant gorilla. Originally titled "Monkey Kong" but due to a translation error from Japan to the U.S., we got Donkey Kong. There wasn't an arcade in the country that didn't have this machine. Kong was angry and had a never-ending supply of barrels to toss your way. Amazing to think, that if it weren't for this completely unrelated game, we wouldn't have gotten one of the most recognizable characters in pop culture history.

Galaga

The "Not really Space Invaders, but totally Space Invaders" game that gained massive popularity. Galaga put you in control of a space ship that had to shoot down various enemies that included bugs, and other ships. High concept it wasn't, but fun to play, definitely. People couldn't get enough. There was a constant fervor for the game, and kids would swap strategies on how to complete it. Galaga is an unabashed, arcade classic.

Pac-Man

Seems unfair to put both Ms. Pac-Man and the original on the same list, but while Ms. Pac-Man was a highly successful arcade game, her husband was the undisputed champ. Pac-Man amassed so much popularity that the game spurned songs, comics and TV shows. It was a crossover phenomenon. Pac-Man creators were depositing more than just coins into their bank accounts. Just think, the game is basically a yellow dot running through a maze, and the world couldn't get enough. From humble beginnings and all that.
