Your teeth are in pain. Or they’re ridden with cavities. Or they have broken. Regardless of why, your dentist is talking to you about teeth extractions. This may sound like the last thing you want to deal with, but it may be for the best. Once you have been told that multiple teeth have to come out, there are some important things that you need to think about. The first thing to think about is who will be performing the teeth extractions. Your dentist may be capable of doing the extractions or he or she may send you to an oral surgeon. Not all dentists are able to perform this level of surgery, especially if you are a special case. This is something to consider because you may not want a stranger prying into your mouth. Another thing to think about is what you will do once the teeth have been extracted. You don’t want to leave gaps in your smile. This is not only going to affect your personality (and likely your self-esteem), it can also lead to gum problems and shifting in the teeth that you do still have left. This means that dental implants may be the best option for you. Depending upon how many teeth are included in the teeth extractions and where they are located, you may be able to look at a few implants, an All on Four or even dentures. What you choose will depend upon several things – including your budget, your overall appearance goals and what your dentist recommends. Another thing to think about with teeth extractions is what it’s going to cost. If you have dental insurance, it’s likely going to be part of your coverage, which means you won’t have to spend a lot of money out of pocket. If you don’t have dental insurance, however, it could end up costing you a lot more – and this is where you will want to find a dentist who will give you a discount because of not having insurance or provide you with some kind of payment plan. Finally, you want to look at the total downtime that you will experience when you have multiple teeth extracted. You may be on pain medication for several days and you may be limited on what you can eat for a while as well. Find out how this is going to impact your life so you can determine when you want to have the extractions scheduled. If your dentist tells you that you need teeth extractions, there isn’t much that you can do about it. You are in control of who does the extracting and how much you spend on it by making some comparisons. Don’t hesitate to ask questions as any dentist needs to be able to answer all of the questions to ensure you are comfortable with your choices.
