Translation can allow your business to expand into more territories than you ever imagined, and you don’t need overseas offices and a much bigger operation to do so. In fact, it can be very simply for a translation agency to work through your existing documentation to produce overseas marketing materials for you. If you’re considering taking the next steps towards moving your company into an international climate, you will need to choose between in-house and agency translation. An in-house translator is someone who you are employing as part of your staff, on a full or part-time basis. They will usually operate from your offices. When you use an in-house translator you’re guaranteed a constant flow of work – but if you don’t have all that much work to be done, is it worth the expense? The costs are manageable Having employees is expensive. And it’s not just the salary that you’ll need to pay for. After training, work lost through sick days (and maybe sick pay on top of that), IT, support and more, the actual cost of employing someone can equate to nearly twice their salary. With a contracted employee you need to give the amount of work which you have agreed in writing. If you choose to work with a translation agency though, you will be paying on a project by project basis. This means you can accurately assess whether you can afford to have the work completed, and have a clear idea of just how much project will cost. Just because the hourly rate might look more on paper, remember that you won’t have to pay for equipment, training, sick days or national insurance. The price you see is the price you will be paying. Collective experience When you employ a translator you get just that – one translator. When you use a translation agency you have access to a wide range of knowledge, and the ability to have the work proofread by a second translator. If there are any issues such as the need for the individual working on your project to take leave, there will be a contingency plan in place and someone else will be able to complete the workload for you to deadline. All in all using a translation agency offers a lot more flexibility. An in-house translator is likely to only offer one, or at most two languages, while an agency can provide any service you need.
