Nowadays, it has become of an utmost importance for a man to give an engagement ring to his fiancée. It is a mark that the man is serious about his relation with a woman and that the ring is a promise that one day, sooner or later, both of them will walk down the aisle and exchange their "I do's" in front of a priest or a lawyer. Since engagement rings are really symbolical in nature, most people want their engagement rings to be special and be something that they could show off, that's why most people choose rings that have rare and expensive gemstones. But how did exchange of engagement rings really start? Is it really important for a man to give an engagement ring to his future life partner? In an article in Reader's Digest, it is believed that pre-historic cavemen tied cords made of grass in the wrist, ankles and waist of his desired partner. Note that as early as prehistoric times, there are already symbolical reasons why people give something to their partner. Still according to article, it was around 2800 BC when Egyptians are buried wearing rings made of metal wires such as gold or silver. During middle ages, it was believed that rings are given as a ceremonial pledge-- a pledge meaning it cannot be broken. However, it was in 1477 when Archduke Maximillian of Austria gave a diamond engagement ring to his beloved Mary of Burgundy which started the trend in giving diamond rings to future life partners. Up to now, people still follow this practice of giving diamond engagement rings as it signifies sincerity and loyalty to their future partners. Men are expected to give the most precious and most special engagement ring that they could provide for their fiancées. Most women feel they are treated as someone really important whenever they receive such rings. Still, it is still the thought that counts. If you cannot afford to buy a ring with an expensive gemstone, then give just any ring that could signify your sincerity to your loved one. After all, all of these ring giving and ceremonial proposals are not really the heart of a relationship. What matters is what you feel for each other.
