As early as middle school, your child can reap many benefits from getting involved in extracurricular activities: 1. Time Management By adding an extracurricular activity to usual family activities, normal daily schoolwork, and down time, your child will learn to prioritize his time. Granted, you don't want to over-involve him, but an extracurricular activity can definitely be beneficial in learning time management skills – a skill that will serve him well throughout his entire life. 2. Exposure to Diverse Interests If the extra activity is to be motivational and enjoyable, cater to your child's natural interests. If he enjoys active play, perhaps sports are his forte. If he seems naturally inclined toward fine arts, music or drawing lessons may be best suited to his interests. Listen to your child to find out what types of activities he'd like to try. 3. Long Term Commitments Your child may start an extra class that he finds less exciting than he originally thought. This provides the opportunity to show the importance of a long-term commitment. He's committed to this activity for the semester, the summer, or however long it runs, but once he's done it's time to choose another option. Commitment to a club or other activity is an important concept for a middle school student to learn. Throughout his life he'll be committed to various jobs or organizations. It's vital that he realize how important it is to be accountable for his participation for the duration of the activity. 4. Personal Contribution Investing himself into a group of his peers helps your child realize that he can make a difference in the world around him. He can be an encouragement to his fellow students. He begins to learn that life isn't all about himself, but it's also about working together with others towards a common goal. 5. Self Esteem Seeing the good that can come from community involvement will naturally raise your child's self-esteem. Feelings of worthlessness are quickly chased away when young teens see the difference that they can make in others' lives. Extracurricular activities also help young teens find their hobbies and natural interests – the things they do well and enjoy doing! These extracurricular activities can go a long way towards finding a career to pursue when the time comes. 6. Social Relationship Skills Most extracurricular activities force middle school students to work together. It requires social relationship skills. Young teens will learn to act appropriately and think of others – all under the guidance of a watchful, supportive adult. 7. College Application Benefits College officials want to see their applicants getting involved in the community around them. High grades are important, but extracurricular activities provide practical life skills that book study can only talk about. Take advantage of the extracurricular activity opportunities that surround your middle school student. Many schools offer classes in music, art or acting. There are also sports programs associated with either schools or communities. Perhaps debate teams or mock trials are your child's forte. Find out what your young teen enjoys and encourage him to develop some of those unique interests outside the classroom!
