Some quits. You have to fire someone. Now what? You cannot leave the position open for long because it's going to cause a backlog. Not to mention there is going to be more work for all of the other engineers on staff and no one is going to be happy about that. Engineering jobs cannot sit open for too long. The last time you hired someone, it took over a month and that's not the kind of time you have right now. When you have to fill engineering jobs, there's a way to do it in under a week. Recruiting companies can be an HR department's best friend. Recruiters make their money on being able to fill open positions. They have resumes on hand at all times for a variety of engineering jobs. As soon as you place a call, they will be able to send you what they have. Not happy with what they already have? Have them keep looking. They are in the industry and they know what makes a qualified candidate and what doesn't - which means they will be able to find someone quickly. In many instances, when you call a recruiter, what they already have is going to be sufficient for you. This means that you can be conducting interviews the very next day after announcing that you have an opening. If you like the people from the interviews, you can have the position filled by the end of the week - and this is considerably faster than any other method. When it comes down to it, not anyone can fill engineering jobs. Engineering is a very specific field and you need talented individuals who have education as well as experience. This means that you cannot risk putting a warm body into a position. You need someone who truly knows what they are doing. If you try to rush the hiring process, you are going to be back to the drawing board in a very short amount of time. By using a recruiter, you can feel confident that those interviewing with you know what they are doing and have the experience to back it up. Depending upon the level of engineering that you are doing, you can even have all of the candidates go through a background check, courtesy of the recruiting company, before they make it to you. This way, you know that everyone is ready to go and can pass through backgrounds before you make a job offer. After all, you don't want to go through the time to conduct job interviews only to find out that there are some dark secrets in their past that will prevent them from getting a security clearance. You have to be smart when you fill engineering jobs. Being smart and being efficient do not have to be separate from each other. When you use a recruiter, you can fill jobs in half the time by using someone who is just as committed to filling an open position as you are.
