Model 6 (Longstroke) 1922 to 1928 then as saddle tank Thumper Introduced in 1922 and continuing until 1939, there are plenty of Model 6s and its derivatives (Tourist, TT model, 3 ½ hp etc) to choose from. All of the early models are generically known as the 'Longstroke'. So far as riding goes there is little to match the soft 'torquey' power delivery. If you are a fan of flat tankers, one of these should definitely be on your shopping list. What to pay? There is little that can be said here that's not a repeat of all motorcycles that span several decades. Flat tanks are worth more than saddle tanks, vintage is worth more than prewar. Flat tank, £12,000-15,000; saddle/vintage in the £10,000 area; and prewar, up to a couple of thousand less than this. Model 90 flat tank 1924-28 Bully for you Exceptional pedigree, stunning sporting performance, still good value -we already praised the look of a flat tank 'beam. Fill the cycle parts with a drop-dead-gorgeous engine and you have perhaps the best-looking of all flat-tank motorcycles. The optional twin-port configuration looks nice, but makes no difference to performance. Early models were classes as 'competition only' and do not have a kickstart. What to pay? Let's not beat around the bush, the Model 90 Sunbeam will be in most vintagents' 'top 10 most desirable' so there will be more potential buyers than sellers. If you go to the bank be sure to withdraw at least £20,000, and more likely £25,000, because that's what it's going to take to pry one of these out of somebody's hands. Model 1/Model 2 1923-1928 Electric Starter Model A flat-tank Sunbeam is some people's idea of motorcycling nirvana and the Model 1 is the epitome of an early 1920s side valve machine. Black enamel, gold lining and nickel plate -surely there is no other combination of colours that says 'vintage motorcycle' better than this? The look is sublime, with nothing breaking the perfect line. Model 1 touring spec', Model 2 'sporting.' What to pay? A 350cc side valve that costs £9000? Paying what you might think is big money or a small motorcycle is the reality, if you want a true flat-tank Sunbeam. Yes, search long and hard enough and inevitably another will crop up for less money, but you won't be finding one for half price. Indeed, knock a thousand off and that's about it so far as bargains go.
