What foods have you been populating your plate with? In the long-term your food choices may well determine your health, vitality and resistance to disease. To help with your choices here's a list of what is considered to be some of the healthiest food on the planet. As the title says, I have recommended raw foods because the vitamins and enzymes present don't get nuked by the ravages of high temperature, extreme cold or from irradiation. 1. Dark leafy green vegetables Spinach and kale are good examples and are indeed an excellent food choice. Both jam-packed with vitamins, enzymes and minerals such as calcium and magnesium vital for metabolic function. These foods contribute to alkalizing your body, balancing the blood pH and are an excellent source of antioxidants. 2. Nuts Nuts are an excellent omega-3 fat source, provide immune system building properties and help fight disease. For example, almonds contain vitamin B17 known to have anti-cancerous properties. 3. Eggs I would strongly recommend organic grass fed free range eggs. Eggs can help provide those nutrients some people are deficient in: As well as quality fat and other nutrients, eggs contain 9 essential amino acids, contributing to the formation of proteins needed for cell growth, replacement and repair. It is a natural vitamin B12 source, much lacking in some people such as vegans... 4. Virgin Coconut oil The idea that saturated fats are bad for you is a myth. This originally came from Dr Ancel Keys in the 1950's from what was found to be highly questionable data... Saturated fats such as coconut oil are extremely healthy. Coconut oil provides a multiple of health benefits. Benefits include: Protection against bad microorganisms, good cardiovascular health, contributing to blood flow, promotes healthy skin, hair, teeth and nails, is a source of energy, helps with brain function and weight loss by appetite suppression. 5. Bananas All ready for you, wrapped up in biodegradable packaging! Grate source of vitamin C, B6 and potassium for good nervous function. They provide good fibre, helping to encourage digestion, while giving a slower release of glucose, helping to avoid blood sugar spiking. 6. Avocados This is an excellent quality mono-saturated fat source for healthy metabolic function, high in fibre and vitamins (b vitamins, folic acid and E). Avocados take some beating when it comes to health giving properties. 7. Garlic How about adding garlic to your salads? This powerful herb contributes to immune system building and helps fight illness. Garlic is certainly not to be underestimated. 8. Berries Berries contain a whole host of antioxidants and vitamins and contribute to immune system building. Berries also have anti-cancerous properties. Seasonal strawberries, raspberries and blueberries come highly recommended. 9. Pomegranate Compounds present in the pomegranate contribute to its high level antioxidant content. Research has shown that pomegranate pulp can be used to help with heart and joint health. How about making a habit of adding this nutritional gem regularly to your shopping list? 10. Pro-Biotics A high percentage of your immune system lives in the gut so 'bad bacteria' needs to be kept down (comes from junk food and a lack of good drinking water....) Good gut health is maintained by having well balanced beneficial bacteria. Beneficial 'good' bacteria includes: Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacteria. These probiotics microorganisms secrete substances beneficial to the gut. The benefits of probiotics include: Aiding digestion, production of B vitamins, calcium absorption, helping to promote a healthy immune system.... and reduces lactose intolerance. Not all probiotic sources are equal. For example, due to the pasteurization process destroying much of the 'good' bacteria most supermarket yogurts have little value. Good probiotics should include the above mentioned Lactobacillus acidophilus (DDS-1) and Bifidobacteria. Raw unpasteurized yogurt, honey, sauerkraut and fermented milk are examples and have these in abundance. Overall I highly recommend buying organic food free of herbicides, fungicides and pesticides wherever possible.
