Last week I touched on how to eat food in the best order to improve digestion. But there’s a little more to it, and that’s food combining. Combining certain foods aid digestion whilst other combinations can put a burden on your system. I’ll show you which foods to combine to help your food move along nicely without the bloating. benefits of food combining What is Combined Eating? The word combined is defined as bringing into a state of unity. There are some foods that unite well and others that don’t. Digesting food involves a great deal of energy. What you want to do is minimise the workload for your digestive tract while at the same time, boost the nutrients that are absorbed from your food. That’s exactly what combined eating does. This is because different food groups require different digestive conditions. For instance, starchy foods and carbohydrates need an alkaline environment to digest properly while protein requires an acidic one. Eating foods that need different digestive enzymes is asking your body to perform two different functions at the same time and that can’t be helpful. Food combining is important because if food is eaten in the wrong combination, it’s left undigested. What happens is that it starts to putrefy which creates a toxic environment and this is the perfect breeding ground for cancer, disease and fungus to grow. When your body is kept in an acidic environment, you’re more prone to disease and you’re health will suffer. Experience Better Absorption with Combined Eating As I mentioned in my previous post, various food groups digest at different rates. By starting with foods that digest fastest first and finishing with foods that digest slowest last, you’ll experience better absorption and less bloating. The same goes for the foods we combine during our meals. Using combined eating can help to eliminate many of the digestive issues we want to avoid. Absorption occurs in the small intestine where small particles of food are absorbed. By combining the correct foods, our bodies can absorb nutrients more effectively. Better absorption leads to your body assimilating the nutrients more effectively which in turn is beneficial for your health. For instance eating foods rich in vitamin C with foods rich in iron will allow our bodies to absorb iron. Eating an antioxidant rich salad with a healthy fat becomes easier for the body to absorb the antioxidants. The other benefit of food combining is that is helps with elimination. It makes sense that if our digestive system is working properly, then your body can eliminate waste easier and this is key to detoxing. Examples of Good Food Combinations I know this can all be very confusing so here are some examples of good combinations: Meat and vegetables* Rice and vegetables* Vegetables* go with anything!
