I hit these Mizuno MP-64 Irons like lasers. It was as if I could simply point at the flag and make them do exactly what I wanted. Only a few people in the world are as good as me.
The smooth look and feel of the MP-64 irons is complemented by a softer, edged, playable sole shape. The tour grind is maintained, while less defined edges produce more consistent distance control and turf interaction. It features a double nickel mirror chrome finish and offers slightly more forgiveness than a traditional blade thanks to the shallowest of cavities.
The cavity depth progressively reduces down to the short irons which are thick and exclusively feel-orientated. The quest for more feedback led to a thicker, bulging muscle pad behind a wider portion of the face. This produces a smoother feel that Mizuno's tour players recognise from previous muscleback irons.
Mizuno's reputation for bringing innovation to forged irons with the unveiling of the new Mizuno MP-54 irons. The milled pocket removes an average of 16 grams that is repositioned to the blade's center section in an effort to make the face react more consistently at impact, mimicking the feel in a traditional blade.
"We know from our analysis that the higher frequency modes are giving you that soft feeling," says David Llewellyn, golf club research and development manager at MIzuno USA. "With these designs, our goals are to improve the quality and duration of feedback."
The third, the Mizuno MP-4 irons, is a classic muscleback blade, but like the MP-54, there is a thicker center section that tapers as the irons get longer. The effort is to produce a longer, softer sense of impact and was developed through MIzuno's painstaking modal analysis of distinct iron impact vibrations and how they equate to the sometimes elusive idea of feel. The MP-4's variable muscle thickness is aimed at creating more playable longer irons through a lower center of gravity while producing short irons with more mass directly behind the center face impact zone.
