Your visual image makes a statement; your verbal image makes a statement. But what about your vocal image? Have you ever considered what the sound of your speaking voice says about you? When we hear a rich, resonant, deep voice, like that of Catherine Zeta Jones or James Earl Jones, we are captivated. Would you describe your voice as captivating? Most people never consider that 37% of the image they project is the sound of their speaking voice. By the way, I’m talking about the one you hear on your answering machine – not the one you hear in your head. If you are soft-spoken, they your listeners may think of you as being shy, introverted, or lacking in confidence. Too loud, on the other hand, and others may consider you obnoxious or overbearing. Perhaps your voice is a nasal and is reminiscent of nails scratching a blackboard. - There are so many adjectives which can describe a voice but the few that are usually missing in the description are warm, rich, deep, mature-sounding.
You may think of your voice as weak or wimpy, strident or shrill, throaty or whiny, too soft, too loud, too high-pitched or childlike. However you describe your voice, the good news is that you have a better one inside of you that just might be as good as that of George Clooney, Cher, Julia Ormond, or Sean Connery. But these are actors, you say. They should have great voices. Yes and No. Not all actors have voices which are captivating. Some do; some don’t. A voice which has resonance captivates because it has depth and breadth. It will vibrate in your chest when you speak. You will also have the capacity to increase your volume without shouting. Now think of the voice you hear on your answering machine. Bear in mind that that sound is the one by which everyone recognizes you. You may think that the voice you hear in your head sounds pretty terrific but that is not the one everyone else hears. What you hear in your head is essentially distorted sound, vibrating in the solid and liquid of the brain. If you are concerned about the image you project, do not ignore your voice. It makes a statement about you which may or may not be true. With training, you can discover a voice which will captivate your listeners, just like that of Kathleen Turner or Denzel Washington.
