This week I was interviewed by Melanie Bown from Physique International, an online fitness workout wear store. I talk about the differences between different types of water and how they affect your body with a focus on competitive fitness training. It’s a quick 5 minute video so check it out. You might learn something! http://youtu.be/fxX-fWsoET0 Mel: I am here with Thomas Cho from alkalife. Thomas, can you tell us a little bit about the company and your product. Tom: alkalife, we formed to help provide households, customers like you and I with an alternative to spring water. Spring water we found out was very acidic which puts your body in an acidic state and we found out it is not very good for health. Alkaline water on the other hand is a natural detox it helps neutralize acidic waste in our body and flush out toxins. Mel: Can you explain to us what the different pH levels are in spring, alkaline and distilled water? Tom: When you look at the waters they all look the same, water looks like water. But when you test it they tell a different story. You can test waters with a ph indicator solution. Notice how all these turn yellow. That indicates that the water is acidic. One our one here this is alkalife and it turns completely blue, so you can tell that just by looking at water there’s a clear difference, one is alkaline one is acidic. Mel: So one thing that we talked about is the fact that a lot of fitness competitors will drink distilled water for contest preparation. Distilled water is neutral which means it has pH level of 7 or it’s a bit acidic so a little bit under 7 and the idea is that it doesn’t have any mineral content and it helps with water retention, so preventing water retention. Tom: What happens is distilled water is very absorbent. It helps absorb things like toxins in your body but also minerals and carbons and when you drink distilled water you find it’s acidic because draws carbon from the air and it becomes acidic. When you drink it, what happens in your body is it really flushes out the good and the bad. So yes it’s a good detox for a short period of time when you want to flush out toxins from your body but at the same time it causes you to lose valuable electrolytes and minerals that are used in your body for body building workouts and that’s very important. Alkaline water works on same principle as eating an alkaline diet of lots of fruits and vegetables. They help neutralise waste and allow your body to recover faster. When you’re working out especially for contest training you’re putting your body under intense strenuous activity when that happens is your body creates lactic acid everyone knows this and to help recover from lactic acid you need to neutralise this acid first whether it’s through alkaline water or through foods and that helps you neutralise and flush it out and recover faster. Mel: Okay and alkaline water has a high oxygen content right? Tom: H2O is hydroxyl ions and hydrogen ions split up so alkaline water naturally contains higher amounts of hydroxyl ions which contains the oxygen and lower amounts of hydrogenthat makes it alkaline water. So these bottles herethat are acidic will contain higher amounts of hydrogen including distilled water which becomes acidic which contains more hydrogen atoms. Mel: And what’s the advantage of having a high oxygen content in terms of blood circulation? Tom: High oxygen – having more hydroxyl ions works as a free radical scavenger. It has an antioxidant effect and it targets free radicals and reduces those. When your giving your body more oxygen through workouts your helping your body eliminate toxins faster and allows you to recover faster. Mel: And what process does the water actually going through to become alkalinised? Tom: You can get alkaline water through a few different forms. You can have it man made through machines, there are alkaline water ionisers that do that, you can pass it through filters that add alkaline minerals and then you have the natural source. Obviously the best way to go with anything whether it’s food or water is the natural source and when you are comparing alkaline water that made through machines or a natural one it’s like comparing raw fruit and veg to something that’s cooked. You’re taking something that’s natural and you are changing the molecular structure of it, so in that process you can lose enzymes, minerals and it is the same case with water, you change the chemical structure of the water and that eventually affects absorption into the body and how the body uses it.
