The evolution of curb machines

Business
When walking down a street, most people will not stop and look at curbs and admire them for being out of the ordinary. In fact, they look like they have been around for centuries and, in fact, they have. However, it wasn’t until the 18th century that the biggest cities around the world started to create curbs as part of the urban development process and the scientists of the time started to think of a machine that could do the curbing in a streamlined way. The first curb machine, used on the streets of London, was undoubtedly a rudimentary one and by looking at today’s state of the art options we can see how far technology has come and how a seemingly complex process can be dealt with a fast and automated way. Those are looking for a curb machine will be pleased to find out that prices have dropped and the latest developments allow for the seamless integration of modern features, such as GPS systems. Even though a machine that was manufactured 30 or 40 years ago will still work and provide at least satisfactory results, there is a huge difference between the technologies used in the 1970s and the ones used today.

There are many differences between yesterday’s and today’s curb machines and most of them can be seen at an internal level. However, some differences can be seen with the naked eye, even by someone who doesn’t have extensive technical knowledge. Let’s take size for example. Some if the machines used in the past were huge, did not pour that much concrete and required a larger team of experts to be operated. Nowadays, the smallest specialized vehicle of this type pours 30 inches of curb/minute and it only requires one driver, which is a considerable development. Apart from the fact that this increases efficiency, it also provides several key benefits to the companies who buy the vehicles, because they don’t need to invest a huge amount of money into equipment purchase or staff instruction.

The average curb machine can last for a very long time – decades, in fact. However, companies who provide specialized services are strongly advised to change them about every seven years, simply because new technologies emerge on a regular basis and it’s not exactly practical to pay for the maintenance of a 15-year old vehicle when, for an almost equal amount, you can buy a brand new one with cutting edge capabilities. Some of the biggest improvements have undoubtedly taken place in the past 10 years, with the development of microprocessors. The best concrete curbing machines are now controlled digitally. Therefore, processes such as steering and pouring are easier than ever before and operators don’t have to push a lot of buttons to get the job done. In fact, all they have to do is select an action and the machine will do everything in a streamlined way. Last, but not least, all these changed have also contributed to a decrease in maintenance costs. Now, the machines just have to be cleaned regularly and they can be used for years without considerable efforts.
