What Is a Soul Mate? "There is a lid for every pot," goes an old saying about finding a mate, and to a large degree it contains some truth. The problem comes in defining that lid, that "soul mate," we all seem to be searching for. In general, a soul mate is a person with whom one has a feeling of deep or natural affinity. This may involve similarity, love, romance, friendship, intimacy, sexuality, sexual activity, spirituality, or compatibility and trust. With this definition, soul mates are not necessarily romantic mates. They can include best friends, parents, siblings, other relatives, and any number of people you meet in your lifetime. Further, a soul mate is also not necessarily a life-long presence. A soul mate can exit your life. This includes those with whom you have a romantic relationship. Does all this mean that you shouldn't look for a soul mate or shouldn't hook up with one when you find someone you think might fit the bill? Of course not. Subliminal connections between people are a fact of daily life, and to ignore such a connection or spurn it is mentally and psychologically unhealthy. How to Know Your Soulmate
