One of the most interesting comments I have heard from my clients was a man who said that he really loved the sound of his voice but he didn’t like how he sounded on recording equipment. What this man did not understand was that the way he hears himself in his head is not his true sound. And it is definitely not how everyone else hears him. |
Most people do not like their voice on recording equipment for two reasons:
1. they don’t recognize what they hear; and, If you have ever tried to talk to someone under water, you may remember a sound that was muffled because your sound waves were travelling through a liquid. The sound you hear in your head is somewhat distorted as well because it is sound vibrating in the solid and liquid of your brain. This is the reason why most people hear their voice deeper in pitch than it really is. In addition, you may find that the sound in your head is fuller and richer in quality than what you hear on your voicemail.
2. the pitch of their voice sounds higher on the recording equipment than how they ‘think’ they sound;
Admittedly, recording equipment varies greatly in quality but you will still get a better likeness of your voice from a recording than that which your inner ear recognizes. (Your inner ear is how your hear yourself; your outer hear is how you hear everyone else.)
While this may not be the most uplifting information you’ve read, the good news is that you actually possess a better voice inside of you. It is your real or true voice. The one you are presently using is your habitual voice.
By changing how you place your sound, you will discover a voice which vibrates in your chest, is deeper in pitch and fuller in quality. If you sound too young, for example, your ‘chest’ voice will sound more mature – not old, not young – ageless. You will also be able to increase your volume without yelling.
Using your chest cavity to power and amplify your sound produces amazing results because you are adding another resonator to the production of your voiced sound – currently, you are using only 4 of those 5 resonators.
You don’t have to accept the voice you hear on your voicemail. Discover your real one and you will no longer be shocked, disgusted or embarrassed when hearing yourself on a recording.
