When it becomes difficult for an individual to properly look after themselves at home, there are lots of available options as well as support. It’s important to find the right type of support depending on the needs of the individual, and how much support they’re going to need to help with everyday tasks. Paid home care workers (home help) will be able to come in on a part time basis (or more often as required. These individuals are also known as care attendants or personal assistants. They help with practical tasks which the ill or elderly might struggle with alone. Types of Home Care Domiciliary care is basic support with everyday tasks which you might struggle with if you’re alone. This can include getting up and going to bed, getting dressed, washing, shaving. It can also be home help such as dusting and vacuuming, shopping, and helping with preparing meals. This helps people to feel more independent, as it means they can still live at home despite decreased mobility. Sometimes a family member might be providing the majority of home care, but because this can be a full time job without any time off, sometimes you will need someone to come in and provide support while you take a bit of a break. Some people feel a bit guilty about leaving their family members but really, if you don’t get a bit of time off for yourself then you won’t be able to provide the same level of care that you would want to, and you might resent the care you’re having to give. There are plenty of services where someone will come and sit with your loved ones, making sure they’re well looked after and giving you a well-deserved break. Some of these services might be funded by the NHS, while for others you might need to pay out. If you think your loved one might benefit from this sort of care, contact their local social services who will perform an assessment about the need for care. They will explain their findings, whether care is possible and necessary, and which services will be provided. Sometimes this will be a temporary service, while in other instances it might be more long term home care. You might have the social service provided directly for you, but in other instances you might be able to find your own services and simply go to social services when you need funding.
