In January 2013 my family received the confusing news that my brother, Sharlon Taki had cancer. Sharlz (as we called him for short) was an outstanding athlete who played Rugby League his entire life. He was incredibly fit and muscular, from the outside you would have never known what his insides were harboring. As the weeks progressed, it was discovered that the Cancer was already in it’s late stages and aggressive. It was primarily in his liver however, had spread all through his body. As most people who are unaware of other cancer treatments, Sharlon opted to do chemotherapy. In the meantime, my family and I worked hard to try and change Sharlon’s diet from being heavily junk-food-laden to fresh, organic foods and juices. Unfortunately Sharlon’s body did not react well to the chemotherapy and by May 2013 he was given a mere 2 weeks to live. Determined not to give up, Sharlon decided to free his body from Cancer using natural treatments. In this time, I immersed myself into a world I sadly had no idea existed – natural treatments and holistic health. It was through self-education that the obvious was highlighted, his poor nutrition, including a heavy consumption of processed foods, refined sugar and carbonated sugary drinks were major cofactors in not only forming the cancer, but feeding its growth through the years. Although Sharlon was unable to stop the growth of the Cancer, passing away on July 17th 2013 at just 28 years old, I am determined in spreading the message of practicing a Holistic Health approach in the prevention and cure of Cancer. The Sharlz Taki Foundation’s current key principles are Self Care, Self Healing and Self Education. Sharlon’s journey is an example of how fit, active, young adults are not immune to this vicious disease and that your insides need just as much attention as our exterior. Through education programs and direct support of those living with Cancer, we can make a difference to the quality of young lives everywhere, all while honoring my brave and inspiring brother. In July this year, I made contact with Thomas Cho, and after a lengthy chat it became clear to us both that The Sharlz Taki Foundation and alkalife water share the same principles and that we can stand together to spread awareness of natural treatments for diseases and preventative, alkalizing lifestyles. alkalife Natural Alkaline Water will be given out at our school education programs. The Sharlz Taki Foundation Ambassador, Shaun Kenny-dowall from the NRL Sydney Roosters is also choosing alkalife as his drink of choice and we both hope to see sugary, unhealthy drinks phased out of sport and fitness arenas. It is truly exciting to know we are united in making a difference in the health and wellbeing of people Australia wide and beyond!
