Admittedly, most of the time, when a songwriter is searching for a creative muse, he or she probably doesn’t think of a door as a potentially fascinating topic to explore. But there’s always going to be exceptions to the rule. In fact, some of the most talented musicians of all time have penned tunes that might’ve been partially inspired by a trip to their favorite door supplier. You never know, right? Here’s a quick, genre-hopping door-themed playlist. Bob Dylan: “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” Not only is this 1973 ballad by the indispensable folkee an irrefutable classic, it’s been covered by loads of notable artists over the years – from Guns ‘n Roses to Avril Lavigne to Antony and the Johnsons. Wyclef Jean even recorded a modified version of “Knockin’” with different lyrics in the verses. The fact that the song has been transferred to so many different styles certainly makes a case for its timeless appeal. Britney Spears: “Don’t Go Knocking On My Door” Anyone who follows the tabloids knows a lot has happened to Britney Spears since the year 2000. Back before her catastrophic marriage to Kevin Federline, series of comebacks, and subsequent transformation into a Las Vegas mainstay, she recorded this somewhat spastic track for her second album, “Oops I Did It Again.” It’s certainly not as bangin’ as the title track, but “Don’t Go…” likely has its advocates amongst Brit’s faithful followers. Notorious B.I.G.: “Kick In The Door” One of the most influential and legendary rappers in history included this thoroughly groovy, brass-laced track in his catalogue of instant dance-floor fillers. Complex magazine ranked “Kick In The Door,” off 1997’s “Life After Death” as Biggie’s seventh best song. The lyrics were apparently intended to ruffle the feathers of some of his rival rappers, so like much of Christopher Wallace’s work, you might want to find a radio-friendly version to listen to if innocent young ears happen to be in your vicinity. Biggie was certainly never one to shy away from cussing. The Ramones: You Never Should Have Opened That Door Like Biggie, none of the original members of the Ramones are still among the living, and because of that, the world of music is a little less awesome. The closing track on 1977’s “Leave Home,” “You Never Should Have Opened That Door” could be considered a deep cut alongside the Ramones’ prolific arsenal of punk rock standbys. The Ramones may not have been the most talented musicians in the world, but no one can dispute the long-term influence they’ve had on popular music and culture. Creedence Clearwater Revival: Lookin’ Out My Backdoor While CCR’s popularity certainly hasn’t maintained the level of any of the aforementioned artists over the years, “Lookin’ Out My Backdoor” was reintroduced to the world during a highly memorable scene in 1998’s cult favorite “The Big Lebowski.” It also underwent an epic heavy metal facelift courtesy of Finland’s Children of Bodom.
