One of the easiest ways to hire people for your organization is to work with a professional recruiter. There are various recruiting companies or "head hunters" as they are commonly referred. Before you hire a company to assist you with your hiring needs, you want to make sure you hire the right one - otherwise it will lead to problems with the overall hiring process. What industries do they cover? If you need to hire IT staff and you hire a recruiter that specializes in the food and beverage industry, it's likely that you won't get the help that you need. While there are some tasks that recruiters can do (and do well) regardless of what industry they hire for, there are some areas where you want experience within the industry. Job descriptions are often similar from organization to organization within the same industry. If you hire a professional recruiter that has been hiring within the IT industry for 10 years and you ask for a network supervisor, they will know what a person's resume needs to have in order to do the job and perform well for your organization - and that's why knowing that the recruiter has experience within your industry is critical. What are their fees? A professional recruiter may charge various rates and percentages. Some are going to charge a flat fee based upon how many people you want and what services you require. Others are going to charge based upon a percentage of the first year salary of the person that you are hiring for. The latter is common with managerial positions. This means that a recruiter may charge 10 percent of the salary. If you are going to pay someone $50,000, the fee to the recruiter would be $5,000. What services do they offer? The services that are offered by a professional recruiter need to be considered because it is ultimately going to determine how much they are going to help you. Some will strictly help you fill open positions while others are going to go above and beyond by offering such things as: - Writing job descriptions - Posting open jobs - Filling positions temporarily - Conducting preliminary interviews - Confirming references - Running background checks The more that a recruiter can do for you, the more you can focus on other aspects of your job. Hiring can be a drain because it is a full time job until you find the qualified candidates. When you can find someone who will do a bulk of the work for you, it can be work it to pay them. What kind of experience do they have? A professional recruiter needs to have experience in a few areas. They should have experience not only as a recruiter but also within a particular industry. Did they gain the experience as a result of first working in the industry or has it solely been related to recruiting? These are things that you can learn by reading the 'About Us' portion of websites as well as by calling and talking to a recruiter.
